In pre-Christian Ireland, Brigid of Kildare was a goddess who was the 'keeper of the eternal flame'. She also cared for women, children and the poor, acted with compassion and worked for justice. A smart lady ... when Christianity came, she became a virgin and kept the same job description. She also started a nunnery and her fame spread throughout Europe.
